1. Dr Satupaitea Viali to attend Hepatitis B meeting in New Zealand
Cabinet has approved the participation by Dr Satupaitea Viali at a Meeting for Hepatitis B Treatment being held in New Zealand on 5 – 6 March 2015.
Hepatitis B is a virus that attacks the liver and it is extremely common in Samoa. Hepatitis B causes liver cancer and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis and liver failure.
Dr Viali is also expected to hold discussions with the Gilead and BMS Drug Company for possible Hepatitis B drug donation for our Hepatitis B sufferers in Samoa.

2. Training for Dog Management Unit
Cabinet approved the participation by Assistant Canine Control Officer, Avia Viiga at a training for the Dog Management Unit. The training was held in Auckland, New Zealand on 16 – 19 December 2014.
The training focused on enhancing skills of workers in the Dog Management Unit for animal management services.

3. Samoa delegation to attend two meetings in New York
Cabinet has approved the participation by a Samoa delegation at two meetings in New York on 9 – 20 March 2015.
The 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women is scheduled from 9 – 20 March. This meeting follows up on reports of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the 23rd session of the General Assembly entitled “Women 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty first century”. The meeting will focus on implementation of strategic objectives and action in critical areas of concern and further actions and initiatives; and emerging issues, trends and new approaches to issues affecting the situation of women or equality between women and men.
The 13th Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action Monitoring Group Meeting will be held on 14 – 15 March. The theme for this meeting is “Women’s Political Leadership within Beijing +20 and the post 2015 Development Agenda”.
Leading Samoa’s delegation is the Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, Tofa Tolofuaivalelei Falemoe Leiataua; the Ministry’s Assistant Chief Executives, Louisa Apelu and Seletuta Visesio; and also includes Board Member for People with Special Needs, Faatino Utumapu and youth representative, Mori Su’a.

4. Interim forensic pathologist
Cabinet has approved the recruitment of an interim forensic pathologist for the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital, Motootua.
Currently, there is no forensic pathologist in Samoa. Post-mortem findings by a forensic pathologist are crucial evidence in court.

5. Procurement 2nd Quarterly Report
Cabinet has approved the Procurement 2nd Quarterly Report for the Financial Year 2014/2015.
This is the report on tendered works and services for Government Ministries and Corporations funded by the Government and through assistance from Development Partners.
The report highlights requirements for Ministries and Corporations:
Compliance with Government Procurement Guidelines & Tender Processes and also as directed in the Treasury Instructions 2013;
Ministries and Corporations must execute recommendations put forward by the Tenders Board in their weekly meetings;
To enforce the Ministries and Corporations’ responsibilities in monitoring works and services that contractors are conducting for Government, and to submit report on projects already approved by Cabinet to the Ministry of Finance.

6. Multilateral Agreement on the Liberalization of International Air Transport
Cabinet has been notified of the partnership between the Government of Singapore, Samoa and the Air New Zealand Company under the MALIAT agreement.
The Multilateral Agreement on the Liberalization of International Air Transport (MALIAT) has already been signed by Samoa and other Pacific countries like Tonga and the Cook Islands.
MALIAT is a good opportunity to further enhance air services for Samoa through attracting airline companies from Singapore to make direct flights here.

7. Repair works for Leifiifi College school buildings
Cabinet has awarded a construction contract to Ah Liki Construction Ltd for Repair Works for Leifiifi College school buildings, as part of the Post Cyclone Evan Recovery Programme.
The tender was advertised for public interest, and ten companies submitted applications of bids.
The Sub Committee conducted an assessment of the tenders according to the tender bidding document before a recommendation was submitted to Cabinet for approval.

8. Procurement of live cattle and sheep from Australia
Cabinet has approved the procurement of live cattle and sheep from Australia for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ Genetic Improvement/Breeding Programme.
The livestock is expected to arrive in May.
This is an initiative by Government to develop new techniques, to improve and promote livestock production in terms of breeding genetics and animal nutrition.
