1. Seventh Japan-Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM 7)
Cabinet has approved the participation by Honourable Prime Minister, Susuga Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi at the Seventh Japan-Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM 7) in Tokyo and Iwaki Japan on 21 – 23 May 2015.
This is the first time this triennial meeting is held in the city of Iwaki in the Fukushima region, which was greatly devastated by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
Issues up for discussion at the meeting include sustainable development, trade and investment promotion, disaster risk reduction and climate change, maritime issues and fisheries.
Prime Minister Tuilaepa is expected to speak at the meeting about Sustainable Development and the Samoa Pathway.
Samoa’s delegation includes the Chief Executive for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aiono Mose Sua Pouvi and Samoa’s Ambassador at Large for the Pacific Islands, Afioga Leiataua Dr Kilifoti Eteuati.

2. Samoa increases contribution for UNESCO office
Cabinet has approved to increase the amount for Samoa’s contribution for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office for the Pacific to US$20,000.00.
The contribution is to assist with operating costs for the UNESCO office for the Pacific in Apia.
The increase was requested by the Director of the UNESCO office for the Pacific at the SIDS meeting in Apia last September.

3. Environment Ministers meet in Bangkok
Cabinet has approved the participation by Samoa at two meetings being held in Bankok from 19 – 22 May 2015.
The First Forum of Ministers and Environment Authorities of Asia Pacific is being held on the 19th – 20th, to be followed by the Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development 2015.
The first meeting will focus on providing a platform for Ministers from the region to discuss issues of strategic importance for Asia and the Pacific, including the Post 2015 Development Agenda and the environmental components of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The agenda for the second meeting include:
- Preparatory event for the High level political forum at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in July 2015;
- Inclusive regional intergovernmental forum at the Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development 2015;
- Practical approaches for integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development;
- Form and functions of the Forum beyond 2015.
Samoa’s delegation is lead by Honourable Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Afioga Faamoetauloa Dr Faale Tumaalii and the Ministry’s Assistant Chief Executive for the Water Sector Division, Mrs Frances Reupena.

4. Construction of access road at Samalaeulu
Cabinet has approved the contract awarded to Sakalafai Construction for construction of an access road at Samalaeulu.
The tender for this project was advertised for public interest, and five companies submitted applications of bids.
The applications were assessed by the Sub Committee according to the tender bidding document before a recommendation was tabled before Cabinet for approval.

5. Samoa to attend 68th World Health Assembly
Cabinet has approved the participation by Samoa at the 68th World Health Assembly being held in Geneva, Switzerland from 18 – 26 May 2015.
The Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body of the World Health Organisation. Discussions at this annual meeting are focused on building resilient health systems. The agenda will also include the election of WHA executive positions; implementation and financing of a programme budget 2014-2015; revisiting of the Outcome of the Second International Conference on Nutrition and other issues like the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity and monitoring the achievement of the health related Millennium Development Goals.
The annual Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting took place on 17 May 2015 prior to the WHA meeting. The theme of this meeting was, ‘Universal health coverage, with an emphasis on aging and good health’. Health ministers at this meeting reviewed case studies and consulted health experts from across the Commonwealth to address ways to improve access to quality, affordable healthcare.

6. Financial assistance for Athletics Samoa
Cabinet has approved financial assistance of $20,000.00 for the Athletics Samoa Incorporated to assist with their preparations for the Oceania Championship tournament in Cairns, Australia this month.
There are 16 athletes in Team Samoa. The focus is to expose our team to competition on the international arena and prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Games in September.
