Deputy Prime Minister to attend meetings in Australia and Fiji
Cabinet has approved the trips by Deputy Prime Minister, Afioga Fonotoe Nuafesili Pierre Lauofo for meetings in Australia and Fiji on 9 – 17 July 2015.

The Pacific Forum Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting in Sydney, Australia will fall on the 9th – 10th of July. This meeting will focus on discussions relating to disaster management in light of the importance of strengthening regional responses to natural hazards. Other issues on the agenda include talks on enhancing good relations between leaders of the Pacific countries and those of developed countries and also partner organisations.
Findings from this meeting will be recommended in the Pacific Forum Leaders Meeting in Papua New Guinea scheduled for September.
Samoa’s Ambassador at Large for Pacific countries, Afioga Leiataua Dr. Kilifoti Eteuati will accompany the Honourable Deputy Prime Minister at this meeting.

Deputy Prime Minister Fonotoe will then attend the Special Pacific ACP Trade and Fisheries Ministers meeting in Fiji on 15 – 17 July.  Issues expected to be discussed include:

Economic Partnership Agreement;
Contentious Issues;
Preparatory work for the implementation of an Economic Partnership Agreement.

NZ-RSE Employer’s annual conference
Cabinet has approved the hosting by Samoa of the New Zealand Recognised Seasonal Employer’s  (RSE) Annual Conference on 9 – 11 July 2015.

Honourable Prime Minister, Susuga Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi delivered the keynote address in the RSE meeting last year in New Zealand, where he conveyed Samoa’s invitation to host the meeting.

New Zealand’s Immigration Minister, Honourable Michael Woodhouse will speak at the meeting this week.  Samoa is expected to recommend raising the cap on the number of Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE)programme workers from Samoa to work in New Zealand. The cap was recently raised to 9,000 for workers from Pacific countries to work in New Zealand every year.

The RSE scheme has provided employment opportunities for many people in Samoa to work for three to seven months in New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture industries. The scheme has contributed to the development of families, villages and churches in Samoa and has contributed to an increase in the standard of living for many families.

Reports indicate that 1,200 workers from Samoa had travelled for work to New Zealand under the scheme this year, and about $12 million has been remitted into the country from RSE workers.

46th Conference of Presiding Officers and Clerks
Cabinet has approved the participation by the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa, Tofa Agafili Patisela Eteuati Tolovaa at the 46th Conference of Presiding Officers and Clerks from the Pacific Parliaments in Hobart, Australia on 6 – 9 July 2015.

This is an annual meeting which focuses on ensuring that the duties of the Speakers and Clerks of the Legislative Assemblies in the Pacific are well maintained.

Deputy Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, Susuga Charlene Malele will accompany the Deputy Speaker of the House.

Fijian Study Tour by Sheep Farmers
Cabinet has approved the Study Tour by Samoa’s Sheep Multiplier Farmers and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture to Fiji on 12 – 19 July 2015.

The trip is a programme initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries for enhancing farming in Samoa, and to familiarise Samoan farmers with sheep multiplier farming in Fiji.

The focus is to acquire technical knowledge and know-how on sheep multiplication practice in Fiji to develop Samoa’s sheep industry. Samoan farmers will also be visiting research and breeding sheep farms in Fiji.

The Samoan group will also acquire knowledge on market investment opportunities; sheep breeding and multiplication programmes; research and development strategies and improved infrastructure on research and development of sheep.

The group from Samoa comprises of 11 representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and sheep farmers.
