The Samoa Independence International 7’s Rugby tournament was officially opened by Honourable Prime Minister, Susuga Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi this morning.
The tournament started on Wednesday with the Business Systems Limited and Ministry of Health Schools Tournament.
The Ulalei Lodge Women’s and Men’s Open Division two day Competitions started today with the final games tomorrow, where sixteen teams will vie for the SII Sevens trophy.
“This is going to be an exciting tournament because there are more overseas teams participating,” said Tuilaepa.
The SII Sevens was also acknowledged by Tuilaepa as a great initiative to further promote the sport of rugby in Samoa and to provide selectors with opportunities to scout for up-and-coming talent to join the national team.
“Thank you for putting together this tournament as part of the Independence activities.”
Tuilaepa also acknowledged the participation by the Fijian and Australian teams and also invited them to stay longer and enjoy Samoan hospitality.
The Prime Minister urged the local teams to play their best, and announced that Government have contributed to the event with financial assistance.
