Every year, the International Labour Organization (ILO) worldwide commemorates World Day for Safety and Health at work, and this year is a little different than usual.  This year the World Day for Safety and Health at Work and the World Day Against Child Labour are coming together in a joint campaign to improve the safety and health of young workers and end child labour.  The aim is to accelerate action to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 8.8 of safe and secure working environments for all workers by 2030 and SDG target 8.7 of ending all forms of child labour by 2025.

For Samoa, the Government through the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Labour (MCIL) this year commemorated World Day for Safety and Health at Work.  The theme for this year is Occupational Safety Health (OSH) vulnerability of young workers.  To celebrate OSH day, the Ministry conducted a Public Awareness program by setting up informational booths throughout Monday 30th April, 2018.  The aim is to educate and instil the message about Safety and Health capturing youth that are currently in the workforce, youth seeking work/about to work and students.

The day ended with the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Stewardship Award which was hosted by the Ministry to recognize businesses, organizations and ministries that have complied with the Act and Regulations on Occupational Safety and Health.  This is the second OSH Stewardship Award the Ministry has had and it is held every two years.

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual international campaign that promotes safe, healthy and decent work. It is held on 28 April and has been observed by MCIL since 2013.
