THE BENEFITS OF NUS SCHOOL OF MARITIME TRAINING

Providing advanced knowledge, understanding and experiences are the benefits offered at the Merger of the SSC Samoa Shipping maritime Academy & NUS School of maritime Training project.
Benefits of the merge include:
• Increase number of staff with Advanced maritime knowledge, skills & experience
• Pooling of Maritime Teaching Equipment & Resources in one location
• Increased number of maritime programmes
• Closer cooperation with Samoa Shipping Corporation to access SSC Vessels for Staff & Students practical work
• Enhanced communication with the Shipping Industry Advisory Panel
• Enhanced work with the Samoa Seafarers Union
• Increased number of Students in Master Class 5 Programmes in Semester 2, Year 2020
• Close collaboration with all Maritime Section.
The merge of the Samoa Shipping Corporation (SSC) Maritime Academy to the NUS School of maritime Training was officiated last month by the Minister of Works, Papalii Niko Lee Hang and the Minister of Education, Loau Solamalemalo Keneti Sio .
The Head of Maritime School, Va’aelua Sonny Brown said 132 students are currently conducting studies at the school’s different Programmes for 2020:
Programmes include:
• Certificate level II in Maritime (Basic Nautical) = 78 Students
• Certificate level II in Marine (Basic Marine Engineering)= 22 Students
• Certificate level II in Maritime (Qualify Fishing Deck Hand)= 8 Students
• Certificate level IV in Maritime ( Master Class 5)=8 Students
• Special Nautical Course = 42 students
• Crowd & Crisis Management Course = 16 Students
All NUS Maritime Programmes are based under the (IMO) International Maritime Organisation – STCW Convention and is well recognised in foreign going vessels.
There are also Clear Structure of job opportunities to foreign going Shipping Companies such as (MSC) Mediterranean Shipping Company, Neptune Shipping Company.
A Cabinet directive has been issued which provided the clear mandate for the national University of Samoa and the Samoa Shipping Corporation to work towards immediate implementation of the merger between the two Maritime Schools under the umbrella of the National University of Samoa.
The Ocean Campus at Mulinuu was visited by the Cabinet Development Committee last Friday.
