KEYNOTE ADDRESS FOR MINISTER OF MINISTRY OF WOMEN, COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF International Day of Rural Women and MARKET FOR CHANGE LAUNCH
Reverend Falenuu Tagataese
Members of Cabinet, members of Parliament
Members of the Diplomatic Core,
CEOs and Heads of Government ministries, private bodies and organizations,
Women’s Committees
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen…
Today, for the first time, the Government of Samoa through Ministry of Women Community and Social Development and its partners is celebrating the International Day of Rural Women on the highlighted theme “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All”. Every year on the 15th of October, rural women and girls are celebrated internationally for their contribution to their households and community environment. As part of the celebration, the Market for Change (M4C) Project will officially launched today in which activities implemented are aligned with the Theme of the celebration..
The main purpose of the of the International Day of Rural Women celebrations acknowledges the efforts of rural women and girls of different age groups who have over the years been involved in development programs and initiatives at the grass root level but it is also to raise awareness regarding their invaluable contribution to the development of their communities as well as the launch of the Market 4 Change project which aims to support and develop safe, inclusive, and non-discriminatory marketplaces in rural and urban areas of Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Is-lands and Vanuatu. The International Day of Rural Women activities looks at highlighting the essential role that rural women and girls play in the food systems of the world.
However, despite all these, discriminatory social norms and structural barriers continue to limit women’s decision-making power and political participation in rural households and communities. It is also important to note that women and girls in rural areas lack equal access to productive resources and assets, public services, such as education and health care, and infrastructure, including water and sanitation. The other raising issues include, out-migration of men for seasonal employment has also affected rural women and girls in a sense of increased workload not only within the home but out of the home as well. Every gender and development indicator for which data are available reveals that rural women far worse than rural men and urban women and that they disproportionately experience poverty, exclusion, and the effects of climate change.
The activities for the commemoration of the International Day of Rural Women is aligned to the Theme of the Pathway for the Development of Samoa FY2021/2022 – FY 2025/2026, and so as the Community Sector Plan 2021-2026; PDS Theme: “Empowering communities, building resilience, and inspiring growth”, Key Strategic Outcome 2 “Diversifies and Sustainable Economy; Key Priority Area 6: Community Development”. The Strategic direction of the Community Sector Plan 2021-2026, Mission of “Empowering communities to lead inclusive development for a quality of life for all” and its Goal “Enhanced inclusive development, improves economic empowerment and social outcome for our communities” It is important to celebrate the rural women who play a vital role in agriculture whether it’s growing and harvesting crops or raising livestock, they are breaking gender norms and stereotypes.
This year the celebrations includes the launch of this program which rural women committees and communities are invited to, continues to advocate the need for gender equality and the empowering of women within the rural areas and ensuring their contribution to the development of Samoa is validated, highlighted and recognized It will also help to highlight the challenges faced by rural women and girls of Samoa and how we can provide support to help minimize or reduce these challenges.
The objectives of the of the overall program is to;
• Advocate for gender equality and empower rural women and girls and highlight the challenges faced by rural women and girls of Samoa
• Raise awareness regarding the contribution of rural women and girls towards the development of Samoa
• Officially Launch the Market for Change Project (M4C)
I therefore acknowledge the extensive support of UN Women and other Development Partners -DFAT Australia, UNDP, NZ Government, Canadian Government as well as our government partners who have been working collaboratively in making this event successful and possible.
