Good afternoon! The focus of today’s press conference is to provide a summary of Cabinet outcomes in the last seven days.
Schools closure for all Early childhood centres, primary schools and colleges are a part of nationwide preventative measures to curb the spread of the ‘Flu strain’ now prevalent in Samoa particularly among the schools population with resultant growing admissions to hospitals. This has come as a recommendation to Cabinet from both the Ministries of Health and Education,
The Ministry of Health continues to drive the Extended Program of Immunisation and encouraging the public especially parents to update and maintain the vaccination statuses of all children given the re-emergence of diseases such as measles as apparent in neighbouring American Samoa
We are also seeing a consistent increase in the number of patients requesting treament overseas mainly for non communicable diseases and complications. We can only advise for all of us to look at changing lifestyles including dietary changes and find alternatives if we are to see a downward trajectory in the prevalence of NCDs in Samoa and move towards a healthier pathway particularly for our youth
Work is continuing on the completion of the remaining segments of the West Coast Road towards the airport with the last of the contracts being let.
Cabinet had the opportunity to discuss the National ID Bill which will now be presented for Parliament’s consideration. Although it has taken 5 years of planning and consultations, implementation is within sight once the legislative processes are completed.
A report was tabled in Cabinet on the outcomes of trhe Electoral review following the last general election. Parliament will now consider this report at its next sitting.
The plan for the final events of the commemoration of 60 years of independence will include the Fautasi regatta on the 26th May to be followed by the commemoration of the arrival of the Catholic church in Lealatele Savaii on May 27. A thanksgiving service will be held at Tiafau on the evening of May 31 to conclude the 60 year commemoration program. Service medal awards will be conferred that same evening before the flag is lowered to close the 60th year anniversary program.
On Thursday morning June 1, the formal ceremony for the 61st anniversary celebrations will begin with the church service followed by the raising of the flag and the march past. Cultural entertainment will be held in the afternoon followed by the ceremonial lowering of the flag to conclude the 61st anniversiary celebrations.
A special variety concert will be held at Mulinuu to conclude the formal program.
We continue to have ministerial representation at the various international meetings and conferences overseas. The focus of these meetings are on the issues of education, health, agriculture and fisheries cooperation, security and climate change and natural resource management and conservation.
The Head of State and Masiofo are attending the coronation of their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla on the 6th of May. HE High Commissioner Francella Strickland and HE Ambasador Fatumanava Dr Pao Luteru are part of the delegation. The Head of State will be delivering the keynote address at a Commonwealth – Coronation special event on Small Islands States with Samoa as the Chair of the Alliance of Small Islands States (AOSIS). King Charles is now the head of the Commonwealth and CHOGM24 hosted by Samoa will be his first leaders meeting.
Soifua ma ia manuia.
