Upolu Apia, Samoa – April 29th & 30th, 2024 – The Registries of Companies and Intellectual Properties Division (RCIP) of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Labour (MCIL) successfully concluded the celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2024 in Apia. Held at the MCIL Conference Room, Level 3 ACC Building, the event focused on the theme “IP and SDG – Building our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity”.

The two-day event commenced on April 29th with a preliminary consultation, bringing together representatives from civil society, the private sector, and the public sector. A total of about 30 stakeholders engaged in productive discussions aimed at recognizing the significance of intellectual property in advancing sustainable development goals.

On April 30th, the event continued with a focused workshop, featuring a diverse audience from various sectors. Afioga Pulotu Lyndon Chu Ling, CEO of MCIL, welcome the participants on Day 2. Susuga Houlton Faasau led the gathering with an opening prayer, setting a tone of reverence and unity.

The Honorable Leota Laki Lamositele Sio, Minister of MCIL, delivered the Keynote Address, highlighting the critical role of intellectual property in driving innovation and fostering creativity, as well as praising the transformative impact of intellectual property on Samoa’s socio-economic landscape, emphasizing its contribution to the achievement of SDG goals.

Furthermore, the Honourable Minister of MCIL, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment that fosters creativity, protects intellectual property rights, and harnesses innovation for sustainable development.

The Minister’s address inspired attendees to embrace innovation, protect intellectual property rights, and actively contribute to Samoa’s journey towards a brighter, more prosperous future.

Day two witnessed a substantial turnout of more than 50 individuals, with participation from civil society organizations, the private sector, art schools, as well as the public and media sectors. Attendees eagerly participated in the day’s program, gaining valuable insights and knowledge to apply in their respective fields.

Today marks the conclusion of World Intellectual Property Day 2024, a significant milestone in promoting awareness and understanding of intellectual property rights in Samoa.
