Salelologa, Samoa – April 25th & 26th , 2024 – Savaii, became the center of discussions on innovation, creativity, and sustainable development as it celebrated World Intellectual Property Day 2024 under the theme “IP and SDG: Building our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity”. Hosted by the Registries of Companies and Intellectual Properties Division(RCIP) of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Labour (MCIL), the event aimed to explore the crucial intersection of Intellectual Property (IP) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The two-day event commenced on April 25th at the MCIL Office in Salelologa, with about 30 participants representing civil society organizations, the private sector, and the public sector coming together for a specific stakeholders’ consultation. The afternoon session featured the video documentation of the Siapo Demonstration, a significant component of the Samoa Branding Bureau project, showcasing Samoa’s rich cultural heritage and creative ingenuity.
On April 26th, the event continued at the SSAB Conference Room in Salelologa, attracting about 50 attendees from various sectors including vocational students. The day was dedicated to a Focused Workshop, where participants engaged in interactive discussions at exploring innovative strategies to leverage intellectual property for sustainable development.
Susuga Houlton Faasau led the event with an Opening Prayer, setting a tone of reverence and unity. Afioga Pulotu Lyndon Chu Ling, CEO of MCIL, delivered the Keynote Address on behalf of the Minister, emphasizing the pivotal role of intellectual property in fueling creativity and innovation across all sectors aligned with the SDGs. Pulotu also underscored the importance of vocational schools as key drivers of Samoa’s innovation industry, highlighting their role in nurturing talent and fostering economic growth.
The event served as a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, share best practices, and reaffirm their commitment to harnessing the power of intellectual property for the collective benefit of Samoa.
