KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY HON. FIAME NAOMI MATAAFA ON TO CELEBRATE THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF MARIST BROTHERS OLD PUPILS ASSOCIATION’S MATAGIALALUA, ELEELE FOU, TUESDAY 30 JULY 2024

(Salutations noted in Samoan speech)

Today, we dedicate and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the

Marist Brothers Old Pupils Association. In the spirit of today’s celebration, we reflect on the journey.

We remember those before us who were instrumental in the establishment of the Association in 1924, under the leadership of Taisi Olaf Nelson. At that time, the Association was known as the “Marist Old Boys Union.”

Today, we reflect on the many successes of its members and the contribution to all facets of Samoa’s development – within the religious sect and the contribution to education, Government, businesses in the private sector, the development of villages and communities and the development of sports in education and at the national level.

Notably, Marist holds a prominent role in the development of rugby. The Marist Brothers were instrumental in introducing skills to nurture the development of the sport in Samoa. As such, Samoa has witnessed the success of its players at the international level.

Marist remains active and successful in all its undertakings. This attest to the solid foundation of respect, good governance, unity and equality, enfolded in the spirit of ‘togetherness’ and the determination to remain true to its purpose – the purpose to support Marist schools and elevate the level of education.

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the Marist Old Boys Pupils Association on reaching 100 years.

To all your members from overseas, welcome home and thank you for the continuous support over the years.

I make special mention of the Marist Brothers who have dedicated their lives to educating the Marist boys and students in Samoa. I trust that seeing the successes of the young men and women you had taught is worth the sacrifices you endured. Thank you, Marist Brothers, and may you continue the good work!

I applaud the foresight and perseverance to succeed. May the legacy of success continue to live in the hearts and spirits of generations to come. Well wishes for the future ahead!

Soifua ma ia manuia.
