OFFICIAL SPEECH BY ACTING PRIME MINISTER – HON. TUALA TEVAGA IOSEFO PONIFASIO AT THE TEAM SAMOA FAREWELL – PARIS 2024 OLYMPIC GAMES

May I take this opportunity, on behalf of the honorable Prime Minister, to convey our best wishes as our Team Samoa is about to depart our shores for Paris, France for the 2024 Olympic Games.

His Highness the Samoa Head of State,
Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament,
Government Ministries Executives,
The Private Sector,
The Executive Board of SASNOC and Sports in Samoa,
Partners in Sport, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Talofa lava.
It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge our Team Samoa, here today and abroad, as it enters into the top sphere of international competition, the Olympic Games, Paris 2024. Since 1984 when Samoa first competed in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States of America, sons and daughters of Samoa have been flying the Samoan flag high and with pride.
There have been many accolades across many platforms of competition both regionally and globally, and we have seen strong and progressive results, by our national athletes against some of the best in the world.
In only a few weeks’ time, the world will see Samoan athletes and officials representing their small island from the Pacific, with pride and joy.
Let me take a moment to reflect on the comparative narrative, whereby countries such as America, China, Great Britain, Asia, Africa, New Zealand and Australia where populations count are in the millions. Compare that fact to Samoa’s own 200,000 local population, where its athletes are selected from.
Secondly, the economy scales of such nations are in the millions of dollars. Millions dedicated to sports. Compare to Samoa.
Yet, as we have witnessed on many occasions, through the years, Samoan athletes continue to perform, coupled with the technical support and prowess of management they have earned great results both regionally and internationally.
We might not have the dollars, but our faith is strong. Samoa is founded upon God.
The same faith that has carried Samoa’s stewardship and direction for decades and to this day.
The same faith that will be our strongest weapon in Paris 2024.
Team Samoa, distinguished guests here today, as we farewell our heros and heroines, let us pray with all of Samoa, that the Almighty Lord will strengthen our Will and our Resolve.
On behalf of the Honorable Prime Minister, Cabinet, Members of Parliament and all of Samoa, wherever you maybe, we wish Team Samoa the very best for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
May God guide you, protect you, and strengthen you in your journey to success.
