Matautu, Samoa – September 24, 2024 – A significant ceremony was held at the Police Interim Training Centre in Matautu to conclude a three-week Basic Motorcycle Rider Training program, marking a historic moment for the Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services (SPPCS) and the Vanuatu Police Force.
For the first time, officers from outside the Pacific region participated in this specialized training, highlighting Samoa’s growing role in regional law enforcement development.
The event was graced by the presence of Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo, along with members of the SPPCS Executive and Senior Management. The ceremony commenced with an opening prayer by Inspector Filipo Iloilo, reflecting the spirit of unity and achievement among the participants.
In his keynote address, Commissioner Auapa’au commended the ten officers from the Vanuatu Police Force for their dedication and successful completion of the training. He noted the significance of this milestone, recalling that just a year prior, Samoa Police officers were themselves trained by the Fiji Police, facilitated by Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew.
The Commissioner expressed gratitude for the ongoing support of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) through the Samoa-Australia Police Partnership (SAPP), particularly acknowledging Detective Superintendent Daniel Evans for his continued assistance.
Motorcycle instructor Sergeant Eliu Iakopo provided a comprehensive overview of the training program, emphasizing the development of participants’ skills in motorcycle handling and safety. This initiative not only bolstered the operational capabilities of the Vanuatu officers but also strengthened the relationship between the two police forces.
During the ceremony, certificates were awarded to each participant, symbolizing their successful completion of the program. Inspector William Thomas from the Vanuatu Police Force expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of his colleagues to the SPPCS leadership, Commissioner Filipo, AFP Detective Superintendent Evans, and the dedicated instructors.
In a gesture of appreciation, the Vanuatu officers presented gifts to the SPPCS Commissioner and leadership, symbolizing the enhanced partnership between the two forces.
To conclude the event, the Vanuatu officers demonstrated their newly acquired skills with a motorcycle ride along Vaiala, showcasing their proficiency and the success of the training program.
In support of the upcoming CHOGM Security Operation, Vanuatu Commissioner Robson Iavro confirmed the commitment of the newly trained officers and the deployment of eight new motorcycles. These motorcycles, along with six new motorcycles for Samoa, have been generously provided by the Australian Federal Police.
The Samoa Police remains dedicated to building regional partnerships and enhancing the capabilities of its officers and counterparts across the Pacific through impactful training initiatives.
