Representatives of Chinese community (各位中资机构和侨胞代表),
Ladies and gentlemen, friends,
Talofa lava. Good evening! 大家晚上好!
It’s my delight to welcome you to the Chinese Embassy, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. On this joyful occasion, I would like to extend sincere appreciation to all friends who have been supporting development of China and China-Samoa friendship.
On October 1, 1949, the People’s Republic of China was founded, ending the century long humiliation of the Chinese nation.
During the 75 years, the Communist Party of China has led Chinese people of all ethnic groups to unite with one heart and forge ahead, achieving tremendous transformation from standing up and growing prosperous to becoming strong.
China is now the world’s largest manufacturing country, the largest country in goods trade and the second largest consumer of goods. In 2023, China’s total economic output accounted for about 17% of the world, and its average annual contribution to world economic growth from 1979 to 2023 was 24.8%, ranking first in the world. In the first half of 2024, China’s economy grew by 5.0% year-on-year, one of the highest among major economies.
During the 75 years, China has been adhering to the people-centered philosophy of development, and achieved a goal of raising the living standards of its people from bare subsistence to an overall level of moderate prosperity, and then to moderate prosperity in all respects. China had eradicated absolute poverty by 2021, reaching the poverty reduction target of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule. Chinese people’s life expectancy increased from 35 in 1949 to 78.2 in 2022.
China insists on green and low-carbon development, and has made major strategic progress in carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. In 2023, China has built the world’s largest clean energy production and supply system, decreasing carbon emission intensity by more than 35% compared to 2012.
During the 75 years, China has been pursuing the independent foreign policy of peace. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, the Belt and Road Initiative has become an international-welcomed public good and cooperation platform; building a community with a shared future for mankind has developed from a Chinese initiative to a global consensus; the Global Development initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative have aroused widespread appreciation.
As long-supporting friend, China adheres to the principle of “four fully respects” put forth by President Xi Jinping in developing relations with Pacific island countries. China fully respects the sovereignty and independence, the will and the cultural traditions of Pacific island countries, as well as their effort to seek strength through unity.
Samoa is among the first Pacific island countriesto establish diplomatic ties with China. Samoahas been firm on the one-China principle, supporting Chinese people’s great cause for national reunification; China has been strongly supportive of Samoa’s independence and sovereignty, and its economic and social progress. Our relations have brought about tangible benefits to our peoples.
Tonight, we will taste the biggest ever Samoa watermelons cultivated by experts of SCATAP. We will appreciate the cultural exhibition of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Samoa and performances by STA group who toured China in August. We will meet the Chinese medical team member working with Samoan doctors in the national hospital and young Samoans who have studied and trained in China. Also joining us are representatives of Chinese enterprises in Samoa and local Chinese community members. They all have been dedicated to China-Samoa cooperation with amazing outcomes.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in July 2024 put forward over 300 reform measures, charting the course for the sustained and sound growth of China’s economy and sending a clear message of expanding high-standard opening up and advancing high-quality development.
China will continue to build a modern socialist country in all respects, and stand firm on promoting a community with a shared future for mankind.
China will continue its active effort to support other developing countries, through international development cooperation and by “teaching others to fish” .
China will continue to work with Pacific island countries to synergize the Chinese modernization with the “Blue Pacific 2050 Strategy”, toward a closer China-Pacific island countries community with a shared future.
China will continue to work with Samoa, to further consolidate the political foundation of bilateral relations, better leverage our economic complementarity, and upgrade our cooperation on agriculture, fisheries, health, education and more.
The year of 2025 will witness the 50thanniversary of the diplomatic ties between China and Samoa. Let us work harder, hand in hand, to build our relations of comprehensive strategic partnership into a new high.
Ladies and gentlemen,
China’s progress and development is also that of Samoa and Pacific island countries, as well as the rest of the world. For our shared future, may I propose a toast:
To the prosperity of the People’s Republic of China and the Independent State of Samoa,
To the lasting friendship between China-Samoa,
To the health and happiness of all guests.
Fa’afetai. Thank you. 谢谢!
