[PRESS RELEASE-Apia, Samoa – February 26, 2025] – The Government of Samoa, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), has signed a contract with Australian company Archimedes Engineering Pty Ltd to manufacture and supply an upgraded Mobile Slaughtering Unit (MSU). This initiative, valued at SAT 1.5 million, is funded under the Samoa Agriculture and Fisheries Productivity and Marketing (SAFPROM) Project, co-financed by the World Bank (WB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
The new and improved MSU is designed to enhance meat quality, safety, and hygiene standards, ensuring that consumers in Samoa have access to healthier and safer meat products. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the upgraded unit will better serve local farmers, particularly those in remote areas, by providing greater accessibility and efficiency in meat processing. This second MSU builds upon the success of the first unit acquired under the Samoa Agriculture Competitiveness Enhancement Project (SACEP), further strengthening the livestock sector’s infrastructure.
Speaking on the significance of this initiative, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Honourable Niuava Eti Malolo, emphasized that the modernized slaughtering process is crucial in ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations while supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
The Government of Samoa extends its sincere gratitude to the World Bank (WB) and IFAD for their continued partnership and financial support through the SAFPROM Project, which remains instrumental in advancing Samoa’s agriculture and fisheries sectors.
“Empowering sector stakeholders, building resilience, and inspiring growth.”
END.
