[PRESS RELEASE -Apia, Samoa – 3rd March 2025] – A notable gathering of officials and community members came together today to honor the exceptional bravery and unwavering dedication of those who responded to the emergency involving HMNZS Manawanui. The Recognition Service, held in the presence of esteemed dignitaries, paid tribute to individuals whose courageous actions exemplified selflessness and professionalism in the face of adversity.
The service was led by Lau Susuga Pastor Peteli Solo, who offered prayers and reflections on the courage and dedication displayed during the emergency. His words of encouragement and gratitude set a firm and respectful tone for the event, reminding all present of the strength found in faith and community inspired by the love to help and offer service to anyone in need.
The keynote address was delivered by Madam Chair, SFESA Board of Directors , Afioga Aiono Meresaini Siaosi Laulua,on behalf of Honorable Minister Faualo Harry Schuster , who expressed deep gratitude to all involved in the emergency response. Acknowledging the challenging conditions of that night, she commended the swift and decisive actions taken by uniformed personnel and civilian responders alike.
“In times of crisis, true courage is revealed—not only in the uniformed heroes who serve every day but also in the ordinary citizens who step forward when their communities need them most,” said Madam Chair Laulua. “The dedication and cooperation between the Ministry of Police, Corrections & Service, ( Police Maritime Wing ) the Samoa Fire & Emergency Services Authority, the Australian Defence Forces, and the civilians who rushed to help is a testament to the strength of our shared humanity and our unwavering commitment to protecting lives.”
The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Her Excellency Sialei Van Toor, New Zealand High Commissioner here in Samoa ; Rear Admiral Garin Golding, Chief of Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy; NZ Navy Commanders and Personnel; Commissioner of Police Auapaau Logoitino Filipo; and Deputy Commissioner Lafaitele Herbert Aati. Their presence underscored the deep partnership between Samoa and New Zealand in fostering security, collaboration, and mutual support.
Certificates of recognition including challenging coins were presented to individuals whose exceptional bravery and professionalism stood out during the incident. These awards serve as a symbol of Samoa’s deep appreciation for their unwavering service and commitment to duty.
Madam Chair Aiono, extended heartfelt gratitude to the New Zealand High Commission and the New Zealand Defence Force for their recognition and support in honoring the heroes of that night. “Your presence today reinforces the strong bonds of friendship and partnership between our nations, a relationship built on trust, respect, and shared values,” she stated.
Special recognition was also given to the families of those honored, acknowledging their sacrifices and steadfast support. “Behind every hero stands a family that shares in their sacrifices, offering strength and encouragement in times of uncertainty. Your love and resilience do not go unnoticed,” she affirmed.
SFESA Commissioner,Tanuvasa Petone Mauga, concluded the service by highlighting the potential for a new partnership between the New Zealand Defence Force particularly the Navy and the Samoa Fire & Emergency Services Authority, aimed at enhancing capacity development.
