PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT (MNRE);

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) through the enabling assistance of the United Nations Environment Programme, gathered with various stakeholders in commemoration of the World Ozone Day at the Millenia Hotel today. The proclaimed date by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day to celebrate annually for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (World Ozone Day, 16th of September) was celebrated by Samoa through a joint stakeholders awareness program, to highlight the theme “Montreal Protocol, keeping us, our food and vaccines cool”
The Keynote Address was delivered by the Chief Executive Officer of MNRE, Mrs Frances Brown Reupena following the Statement given by the Head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Office in Apia, Mr. Sefanaia Nawadra, on behalf of UNEP the Implementing Agency for the Montreal Protocol in Samoa. During Mrs Reupena’s keynote address, she emphasized the crucial work the Montreal Protocol has done and continued to do throughout the years in protecting the ozone layer, preventing climate change, promote energy efficiency in the cooling sector and enhance food security.
To further promote awareness on ozone protection and climate benefits under the Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol, the Asia-Pacific Regional Ozone2Climate Art Contest was also launched. The year-long contest organized by UNEP, through its OzonAction Compliance Assistance Programme (CAP) is now opened for entries until the 31st of March. The ceremony was also an opportunity to distribute certificates for RAC technicians who completed the Refrigeration & Air Condition (RAC) trainings.
The Government acknowledges the assistance of the United Nations Environment Programme and the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol enabling the implementation of ozone protection activities in Samoa.
