To our failotu this morning, Susuga le Fa’afeagaiga malolo manumalo and to our esteemed participants and partners; it is my great pleasure to speak on this occasion of International Museum Day.
This day is celebrated not only in Samoa but all over the world to recognize the vital role that museums play in society, as they preserve, promote cultural heritage, encourage education, and foster intercultural dialogue. Therefore, I thank the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture for the opportunity to participate in this year’s event.
International Museum Day is an annual celebration that takes place on May 18th each year. The Museum of Samoa has consistently done a tremendous job over the past three years in sustaining its role to lead and raise awareness in safeguarding and preserving our history, culture and heritage.
The theme for this year is “Museums, Sustainability and Well-being” – “Falemata’aga, Gafataulimaina ma Soifua Manuia”; which reflects that museums are key contributors to the well – being and to the sustainable development of our communities. As trusted institutions and important threads in our shared social fabric, they are uniquely placed to create a cascading effect to foster positive change. Therefore, there are many ways in which museums can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: from supporting climate action and fostering inclusivity to tackling social isolation and improving mental health.
Today too is an opportunity for local museums to showcase their collections, engage with the public in new and innovative ways, and build partnerships with our local cultural institutions and stakeholders who are with us now.
Therefore, I would like to acknowledge and thank you all for your presence here today. Promoting and safeguarding our cultural heritage is our collective responsibility by working in collaboration for our future generation and Samoa as a whole.
