Samusu to Lalomanu
The East Coast inland route road from Samusu to Lalomanu was officially opened by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi this morning.

The road, which is 5.2 kilometers long, runs from Lalomanu Hospital and joins to the Richardson Road to Apia, at Samusu.

“This road together with the construction of the Tsunami Escape Routes along the escarpment between Lalomanu and Lepa, is the final works under the Post Tsunami Relief works programme which is funded by the World Bank,” said Tuilaepa.

As an ALL weather Emergency road, it has been built to a higher standard than normally required for rural access roads, and connects to eight inland access roads already completed.

Continued the Prime Minister,

“The World Bank has been instrumental in providing much needed funds and resources in ensuring the successful completion of this important project to the people of Samoa.

“I also wish to acknowledge with gratitude the continuing support by our respective village councils of Aleipata district during the construction phase of this project.”

Community involvement and cooperation has been very important as the road has been built on customary lands.

Construction works were undertaken by two local companies, Ott Constructor Co. Ltd and Silva Transport Co. Ltd at a total cost of $12,149,095.00 tala.

The research, surveying and design contract was completed by BECA/OSM/PLT Consultancy Companies.

Tiavea
A 1.6 kilometer road was also opened at Tiavea, by the Prime Minister.

Delivering the opening address, Tuilaepa acknowledged the importance of the Tiavea village council in supporting Government’s infrastructure project, as well as noting the importance of maintaining the finished work.

“The value of any road is not in how much was spent on it, but from the benefits it provides to the communities that use it.
“This road is for you and your families to use, so use it for the development of your families and communities.  But make sure that you take good care of it so it lasts.”

The total cost of the project was $866,565.00 tala and undertaken by TN Toleafoa Construction.
