Press Release
15 February 2015
Preparations are currently underway at the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture for the opening of the Samoa School of Languages (SSoL) in the first week of March. With the growing diversity of cultures in Samoa, the SSoL opens doors to interested people who wish to learn a new language. This initiative enhances one’s chances for work, adventure and citizenship in a multi-cultural world by equipping them with important tools for global and cultural understanding and the ability to communicate and interact with people meaningfully across cultures.
The School offers interested participants the opportunity to learn a foreign language. The first language to be offered is the Chinese Language.
The vision of SSoL is to “Empower Samoans by experiencing the world through discovery and exploration of different languages and cultures”.
The establishment of the SSoL will contribute to the Ministry’s efforts to provide access to education that appreciates cultural and intellectual diversity of potential individuals. At the present time, the Ministry is working collaboratively with the Samoa Qualifications Authority to ensure that the courses meet their criteria for Recognition of Non-Formal Learning (RNFL).
The Chinese language will be taught by three qualified teachers from China who are currently teaching in three primary schools in Samoa, under the Ministry’s partnership with the Chinese Confucius Institute Headquarters (HANBAN).
Other languages to be offered in the near future are the Japanese, Samoan, English, German and French languages.
The school is located in the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture compound at Malifa and is scheduled to open in the first week of March this year.
Additional information on enrolment, school fees, school hours and so forth can be found on the Ministry’s website www.mesc.gov.ws. Alternatively, please contact Leota Valma Galuvao at email v.galuvao@mesc.gov.ws or on Telephone 64601.
